Yes at settings in the camera menu.

there are no settings at the camera menu to turn of the sound when making a photo

Check your manual it reads there too DUDE!
I have my camera when taking a foto whithout a sound.
Go to camera go to settings see menu

I've just had a look at my 8800 (which was bought sim-free - so has no operating 'upgrade' on it) and have found the following via the menu function. Go to:
Menu > Media > Camera > Options > Settings > Camera Sounds > Off
This should work.

Renember! this option is only at firmware 3.79 and 3.94 Older not!!!

thr is no such option thr in 8800 . . .. Camera Sounds > off or on ... i dont think it is possible to turn off the camera sound . ..
